Before I talk about The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, I just want to remind people that tonight is the big night for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street!
Tonight, PBS is showing a recording of Sweeney Todd from the New York Philharmonic company that stars Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel as Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd! Look for it on the PBS channel at 9 PM eastern standard time. (Hint: it'll be during the TV program Live from Lincoln Center because it was shown there.) Don't miss it!
Now onto The Hunchback of Notre-Dame....
The Victor Hugo written novel the movie was based off of is twisted and dark, much too dark for a Disney movie but they did well. I think the movie excelled because the younger children (which were the targeted audience) couldn't grasp the hidden darker messages--I mean, Frollo is talking about lust for Esmeralda and wanting to copulate with her during his song "Hellfire" and Quasimodo was tortured in a village square for looking like himself.
I just recently discovered that Disney helped produce a Germany-based musical theatre version of this movie, which thrived in Berlin and was one of the city's longest running musicals. Recently, The King's Academy portrayed an English version of this musical and after I come back from class, I will look through the entire show and see how it is! Here's the link for the school's videos; they had put on a lot of productions, some I'm envious they can pull off!
But for now, here's my favorite song from this production (based off of how I liked listening to it in the movie), "Heaven's Light/Hellfire". (Frollo's character personally interests me!) The actual song "Hellfire" starts past the second minute and ends around the seventh minute
